Education through WhatsApp is a visual project that aims to make visible the increasing social inequalities regarding access to education in elementary school in Ecuador, its consequences and responses during the COVID 19 emergency.
Most of the children from rural zones in the province of Pichincha, face some specific challenges, including lack of connectivity and economic recessions at home, to continue their studies through tele-education, during this health crisis. Their families have been affected due to the suspension of work activities because of the nationwide quarantine.
Massive layoffs and business closures have complicated students' access to education due lack of resources. On other hand, quarantine in rural areas is carried out without losing the sense of community they live with, and their confinement is not limited to being inside the house. The countryside is part of their home and unavoidable daily life.
This part of the collective project shows the peculiar dynamics of the quarantine in rural areas, specially in access to education, and keeping in mind that their conditions were precarious even before the pandemic.
